CCD
CCD stands for the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, a traditional name for Catholic parish-based religious education. It teaches children the beliefs, practices, and values of the Catholic faith.
CCD at St. Mary’s School
CCD (Faith Formation) classes continue at St. Mary’s church down the street as well as through daily Religion classes.
CCD is part of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Parish’s Faith Formation offerings. It is designed to support parents as the primary educators of their children’s faith while preparing students for the sacraments and a lifelong relationship with Christ.
Families interested in religious education for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade should contact the Faith Formation Office at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to register. These classes typically run from September through May and often meet on Sunday mornings or weekday evenings, offering age-appropriate instruction, sacramental preparation, and opportunities for students to grow in their understanding of Scripture, Church teachings, prayer, and Catholic life.
Families are encouraged to register during the summer months, usually July and August, ahead of the new program year, and to maintain regular Mass attendance as part of the overall formation process. Copies of baptismal certificates and participation in any required parent orientations are standard parts of registration.
In essence, CCD (or Faith Formation) at St. Mary’s continues to be the parish pathway for children who are not enrolled in Catholic school religious instruction or who need additional preparation for sacraments such as First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Through these classes, children deepen their faith, build community, and prepare with confidence for key moments in their spiritual lives.
Sacramental Preparation:
First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion (Grade 2)
Sacramental preparation is a prayerful and intentional two-year journey that begins in 1st grade through our Catholic faith formation and religion classes. This preparation culminates in 2nd grade, when eligible students receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, typically celebrated in April.
To participate, students must be baptized no later than the end of 1st grade. This requirement helps ensure students are fully prepared to receive the sacraments with understanding, reverence, and a strong foundation in the Catholic faith.
